Chesapeake is an independent city in the southeastern part of the United States Commonwealth of Virginia. It is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area and covers approximately 351 square miles (908 square kilometers). It is the second-largest city in Virginia and the 88th largest city in the United States, with a population of 254,479 in 2023.

Chesapeake’s government is a council-manager system, with the city council serving as the legislative branch and the city manager serving as the executive branch. The city council is made up of eight members, one from each of the seven voting districts and one at large.

Chesapeake is located in southeastern Virginia, bordered to the east by Virginia Beach, to the north by Norfolk, and to the west by Suffolk. The city is located in Virginia’s Coastal Plain region, with relatively flat terrain and an average elevation of about 10 feet (3 meters) above sea level.
