Minneapolis is the biggest city in Minnesota with a population of 425,336 As of 2021. It is the largest city in the state of Minnesota and the 46th largest in the United States. The city is abundant in water, with thirteen lakes, wetlands, the Mississippi River, creeks, and waterfalls.
The Dakota tribes, particularly the Mdewakanton, were permanent settlers in the area as early as the 16th century. Minneapolis was incorporated as a city in 1867, and in 1872 the city of St. Anthony (chartered in 1860) was annexed to it. After the spread of the railroads in the 1870s, Minneapolis became the gateway to the Northern Great Plains.
