The National Flag Of Gabon is a tricolor consisting of three equally sized horizontal bands of green on the top band, yellow in the middle band and blue as the lower band. It has a ratio size of 3:4. The Flag was adopted On August 9, 1960, to replace the previous colonial Flag Of Gabon containing the French Tricolour at the canton. It has been the Gabon National Flag since the country gained independence that year. The history of Gabon shows Pygmies as inhabitants.

In 1839, the French gained control of Gabon and it became part of the French colony. The French authority did not allow the development of national flags in their colonies. Gabon became a French colony in French Equatorial Africa In 1910. The country was in an economic depression until after World War I. From 1910 until 1957, Gabon as part of French Equatorial Africa. In 1960, the country became a new independent Republic of Gabon and elected a president.

 

Meaning Of The Flag

On August 9, 1960, the French Tricolor was dropped, and the central yellow stripe, symbolic of the Equator, which runs through Gabon, was widened to give it equality with the other stripes. The green color on the National Flag Of Gabon represents the green of the forest. With the equator crossing the country, their forest is very lush and green. The blue stripe on the flag is a reminder of the extensive coast along the South Atlantic Ocean. Yellow represents the country’s other natural resources and the Equator line which passes through the country.
