Design Of The Flag

The design of the National Flag Of Philippines has roots in the flag family which is the last group of colonies that sought independence from the Spanish Empire at the close of the 19th century, a group to which the Philippines belongs. The earlier design of the current Flag Of Philippines was conceptualized by Emilio Aguinaldo during his exile in British Hong Kong in 1897.

The Design of the Philippines flag consists of two horizontal stripes of equal width in the colors of royal blue and scarlet, which are covered by a white equilateral triangle at the leech. The center of the triangle holds a golden sun with eight primary rays. At each vertex of the triangle is a five-pointed, golden-yellow star.

Symbolism Of The Flag

The white color of the flag represents hope for equality, while the blue stripe stands for peace, truth, and justice. Finally, the red stripe symbolizes patriotism and valor. However, when the two stripes of the Philippines National Flag are interchanged, this signals that the country is in a state of war.

The eight-rayed sun on the flag symbolizes the first eight provinces (Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Bulacan, Laguna, Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija) that revolted against the Spanish colonial government. The three five-pointed stars of the Flag Of Philippines represent the three main island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

History Of The Flag

Prior to the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution of 1896, the Filipinos had no national flag of their own. The only known Philippines National Flag to them was the Spanish flag. But when the Filipinos rose in revolt against Spain, each revolutionary group had used own banner-like flag. The 1898 overthrow of Spanish authority by the United States-led Filipinos to believe that their country’s independence was guaranteed and proclaimed on June 12, 1898.

The first republic was finally suppressed by the United States, and its flag was outlawed between 1907 and 1920. Under Japanese occupation, the National Flag Of Philippines was first forbidden and then officially recognized on October 14, 1943, when the Japanese-controlled second republic was proclaimed. Finally, the United States granted independence to the Philippines on July 4, 1946, under the 1898 Flag Of Philippines.
