National Flag Of Thailand

National Flag Of Thailand

The Current National Flag Of Thailand is One of the World’s oldest Flags. The Flag officially adopted according to the royal decree issued by Rama VI On September 28, 1917. The flag is locally known as Thong Trairong, which literally means ‘tricolor’. The Flag Of Thailand design features five horizontal stripes in the colors red, white, blue, white and red, with the middle blue stripe being twice as wide as each of the other four.

The three colors red-white-blue on the Thailand National Flag stand for nation-religion-king which is the unofficial motto of Thailand. Each color of the flag represents something different. The red stripes represent the land and the people. The white color stands for purity and Buddhism (the country’s primary religion) and blue symbolizes the Thai monarchy. The blue stripe on the National Flag Of Thailand also has a double meaning as it stands in solidarity and honors Thailand’s World War I allies, namely Great Britain, France, the United States, and Russia, which all have red, white and blue flags.

History Of The Flag

The first flag used for Thailand which is known as “Siam” was probably a plain red one, first used under King Narai (1656–1688). In 1855, King Mongkut (Rama IV) officially created the first Flag Of Thailand, complete with a red backdrop and a white elephant in the middle of it, which has long been a royal symbol and the national animal of Thailand. The flag was modified in 1916 to change the elephant. The current Thailand National Flag was adopted in 1917.
