National Flag Of The Democratic Republic Of The Congo

The National Flag Of The Democratic Republic Of The Congo was first Adopted on 20 February 2006. The Democratic Republic of the Congo flag features three different colors. It consists of a sky blue field divided diagonally from the lower hoist corner to upper fly corner by a red stripe bordered by two narrow yellow stripes; a yellow, five-pointed star appears in the upper hoist corner.

The colors of the flag, like many other national flags, have deep symbolism. The blue of the National Flag Of The Democratic Republic Of The Congo symbolizes peace and Red represents the blood of the country’s martyrs, while yellow was included to represent the wealth of the nation. The star that is located in the upper left canton symbolizes the country’s bright future.

 

History And Previous Flags

In 1885 King Leopold II of Belgium chose the first official flag of the Congo Free State. The flag with a blue field and a large gold five-pointed star. When the country became Belgian Congo in 1908 the Flag Of The Democratic Republic Of The Congo remained the same. When Independence was granted from Belgium in 1960 six five-pointed yellow stars were added to the left-hand side of The Congo National Flag to symbolize the six provinces of the country.

In 1963 the flag was changed to feature a large star in the top left-hand corner and a diagonal yellow-bordered red stripe added to symbolize the people’s blood and prosperity. The red stripe was made thicker in 1966. When the country became the Democratic Republic of Congo again in 1997, a version of the 1960 flag with a lighter blue field was chosen. In 2003 the flags field color was changed to a light blue and then in 2006, the Flag Of The Democratic Republic Of The Congo was changed to resemble the flag that was used between 1966 and 1971 with a lighter blue field.
