National Flag Of El Salvador
The National Flag Of El Salvador Was Officially Adopted On May 17, 1912. The Flag features a Triband Of cobalt blue-white-cobalt blue, with the coat of arms centered. A Different Version Of The Flag Of El Salvador Was in Use From 1865 to 1912, With a field of alternating cobalt blue and white stripes and a red canton containing white stars. The blue and white colors used by the United Provinces of Central America after they gained their independence from Spain in 1823. The centered emblem is surrounded by the five flags of the United Provinces.
The two blue stripes on the El Salvador National Flag represent the two oceans bathing the coasts of Central America, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific. The reason for the Atlantic Ocean to be included symbolically in the Flag Of El Salvador is because most of the countries of Central America have always had the idea of merging into a single nation as it happened in 1824 when the Federal Republic of Central America was conceived. This unionist ideal still lives on. This federal republic, later on, broke down and the former provinces that made part of it became independent states. The white stripe represents the longing of the Salvadoran people for peace.

At the center of the National Flag Of El Salvador, There is El Salvador’s Coat of Arms Which was adopted in 1912. Encircling are the words República de El Salvador en la América Central which means the Republic of El Salvador in Central America. The center of the Coat of Arms consists of a triangle that represents the three branches of government (executive, judicial and legislative).
Under the triangle, there is a golden Amber (color) scroll which states the national motto of El Salvador: Dios, Unión, Libertad (Span., “God, Union, Liberty”) in the capital and bold black letters. The Five volcanoes within the triangle represent the five member states of the United Provinces of Central America. Above the volcanoes, there is a red Phrygian cap on staff before a golden sun and the date of 15 September 1821, Independence Day of El Salvador.
Behind the coat of arms, there are five raised flags representing the flags of the Federal Republic of Central America. All of this is surrounded by a laurel garland, which is tied together under the El Salvador National Flag. The garland is divided into 14 different parts, which symbolize the 14 Departments.
Version Of The Flag
According to the official Webpage of the Presidency of El Salvador, There are two variants of the Flag Of El Salvador. The first Flag Of El Salvador is the Bandera Magna, which could be translated as “Great Flag”. This one carries the national coat of arms centered within the middle bar and is to be used exclusively by the government, military and other official entities.
The second one is the Bandera Nacional, or “National Flag”, which includes the words Dios, Unión, Libertad (God, Union, Freedom) in gold letters within the middle bar. This National Flag Of El Salvador is to be used by civilian entities, including schools, merchants ships, buildings, private persons and such.
