National Flag Of Namibia

The National Flag Of Namibia was adopted On 21 March 1990 After Namibia gained independence from South Africa. The National Symbols Sub-Committee received 870 entries for the Flag Of Namibia. Six designs were short-listed for the flag and this was reduced to three, those of three Namibians – Theo Jankowski of Rehoboth, Don Stevenson of Windhoek and Ortrud Clay of Lüderitz. These three designs were finally selected for the Namibia National Flag.

Design Of The Flag

The National Flag Of Namibia features two triangles that are separated by a diagonal band in the between them. The upper triangle is blue in color and the lower one is green. The diagonal band between them is red and is bordered by white. It runs from the lower hoist-side corner to the opposite corner of the flag. The upper triangle has a gold sun with 12 triangular rays radiating from all sides.

The National Flag is a symbol of Namibia’s struggle for national unity. The Flag Of Namibia symbolizes peace, unity and common loyalty to Namibia. The National Flag represents the nation in every aspect. The color gold represents warmth and the color of our plains and the Namib Desert.

The blue color symbolizes the Namibian sky, the Atlantic Ocean, our marine resources and the importance of rain and water. Red on the Namibia National Flag represents the Namibian people, their heroism and their determination to build a future of equal opportunity for all. The White color refers to peace and unity and the green symbolizes the country’s vegetation and agricultural resources. Within the blue segment lies a 12-pointed star (the Sun) signifying energy and life.
