National Flag Of South Africa

National Flag Of South Africa

The National Flag Of South Africa was officially Adopted On 27 April 1994. The flag was adopted at the beginning of South Africa’s 1994 general election, to replace the flag that had been used since 1928. The Flag Of South Africa was designed in March 1994 by a former South African State Herald named Mr. Frederick Brownell. The flag designed composed of horizontal bands of red and blue of equal width.

Those band separated by a central green band which splits into a horizontal “Y” shape, the arms of which end at the corners of the hoist side (and follow the flag’s diagonals). The “Y” embraces a black isosceles triangle from which the arms are separated by narrow yellow bands; the red and blue bands are separated from the green band and its arms by narrow white stripes.

Meaning Of The Flag

The design and colors on the South Africa National Flag are a synopsis of principal elements of the country’s flag history. Colour combinations of the flag represent different meanings for different people and therefore no universal symbolism should be attached to any of the colors.

The South African flag’s Y can be seen as a symbol of convergence, that is, two parts uniting to become one, showing the joining of the country’s diverse elements. The colors of the National Flag Of South Africa reflect African history, particularly South Africa’s relationship with the Netherlands and the UK.

History of the Flag

The Dutch (now Afrikaners) and the English, two major European populations brought flags whose use persisted until 1994 in South Africa. The end of the apartheid era was marked by the universal-suffrage democratic elections of April 1994. The election bought a strong victory for supporters of the African National Congress (ANC).

Many whites had feared that the black-green-yellow horizontal tricolor of the ANC, representing black Africans, the land, and mineral wealth, would be made the Flag Of South Africa. Instead, the new South Africa National Flag hoisted on April 27 was a compromise in design and colors intended to represent and reassure all segments of the population.
