Hibiscus is the national flowerof Malaysia. Hibiscus rosa- sinensis is the scientific name of Hibiscus and it is commonly known as Bunga Raya in Malaysia. Bunga Raya means Celebratory flower. It also known as China rose. Rosa-sinensis means rose of china but it is not related with rose or rosaceae family, it comes from malvaecae family,which is native to Asian tropical region.Every country has desire to having a national symbol or emblem. Malaysia is not out of this. After they are getting true Independence in 1957 they are very much keening to adopt a flower, which symbolize country identity as well as the nation. In this context, the Ministry of Agriculture called proposal from all state governments about their choice.
There were seven flowers have proposed and those are hibiscus, jasmine, rose, lotus, ylangylang, frangipani and bunga tanjung. Interestingly the state governments dividedby east and west coast. East coast voted for rose while west coast for Jasmine. After a long discussion and wide thinking the Ministry select Hibiscus as the National Flower of Malaysia and that declared in the year of 1960.
