The municipal city limits cover 1,961.1 square miles (5,079.2 square kilometers), encompassing the urban core, a joint military base, several outlying communities, and nearly all of Chugach State Park.

Anchorage is situated on a relatively flat plain, with the Knik and Matanuska Rivers flowing through the city. The city’s elevation ranges from sea level to over 2,000 feet.
