Qinghai is a province in Northwest China. It is located south of the Republic of Mongolia, east of Xinjiang, and north of Tibet. Map of Qinghai Province covers an area of over 720,000 square kilometers and has a population of 5.04 million. It is one of China’s least densely populated provinces with under six million people in an area somewhat larger than France. The capital city of Qinghai is Xining.
Qinghai Province shares borders with Gansu on the northeast, Xinjiang on the northwest, Sichuan on the southeast, and the Tibet Autonomous Region on the southwest. The province was established in 1928 under the Republic of China period during which it was ruled by Chinese Muslim warlords known as the Ma clique. The Chinese name “Qinghai” is after Qinghai Lake. It is the largest lake in China 1,740 sq miles [4,507 sq kms] and the largest saltwater lake in Central Asia.
The area of Qinghai was brought under Qing rule in 1724. After the overthrow of the Qing dynasty in 1912, the region came under Chinese Muslim warlord Ma Qi’s control until the Northern Expedition by the Republic of China consolidated central control in 1928, creating the province.

Xining is the provincial capital, located near the border with Gansu. The city has a 14th-century Great Mosque which is the largest in China and built-in Chinese style.
There is also has the Daoist Bei Shan Temple. The Ta’er or Kumbum Lamasery is an important center for Tibetan Buddhism located south of Xining. It was the birthplace of Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism and also the birthplace of the present 14th Dalai Lama. Over 650 monks live here.

Qinghai’s terrain features Mt. Qilian Shan in the north, Mt. Tanggula Shan in the south, and Mt. Kunlun Shan in the middle, and basins distribute among these mountain ranges. Yangtze River, Yellow River, and Lancang River, China’s three major rivers all start in Qinghai province. There are numerous lakes in Qinghai, including the largest inland salt lake, Qinghai Lake.
Qinghai enjoys a typical continental highland climate, characterized by sharp changes in daily temperature. Summer is short and dry, while winter is long and cold. With an annual rainfall between 50 ~ 400 mm, the average annual temperature is between -5 ~ 8 ℃, and -18 ~ -7 ℃ in January and 5 ~ 21 ℃ in July.

Qinghai borders Tibet in the south. These two regions are connected by Qinghai-Tibet Railway or Qinghai-Tibet Highway. Regular trains travel back and forth between Xining and Beijing, Shanghai, Lhasa, etc. Lanzhou-Xinjiang High-Speed Railway has a station in Xining, which incorporates Xining into China’s extensive high-speed railway network. Xining Caojiapu International Airport is the largest airport in Qinghai Province. Other auxiliary airports in Qinghai are Golmud Airport, Yushu Batang Airport, Delingha Airport, Huatugou Airport, and Golog Maqin Airport.
